Karungali is the Tamil name for black ebony, a dark, heavy wood that grows very slowly. In South Indian tradition it is linked with Lord Murugan, and Karungali malas have long been worn by devotees for protection. Karungali is also connected with Mangal (Mars) and Shani in astrology.
Anyone, of any rashi, age or gender. Especially popular with devotees of Lord Murugan, and often suggested for Mesh and Vrishchik (ruled by Mangal) and Makar and Kumbh (ruled by Shani).
